San Vito, Costa Rica

Renowned Tropical Highlands Estate For
Sale in Southwest Costa Rica

Found in
international tourist guidebooks every year since 1997, Finca
Cántaros  in Linda Vista de San Vito is a unique property of just over 7 hectares or 17.3 acres in a cool, comfortable, tropical highlands climate. The elevation is 1150-1200 meters (3770-3900 feet) with temperatures ranging between 58-85° F (14-30° C) year round. The property is currently being managed as a private nature reserve open to the public (with entrance fee) with magnificent trees in secondary forest, tropical gardens, 1-hectare/2.5-acre lake/wetland (Laguna Zoncho on geographical survey maps), forest trails, wildlife habitat, and spectacular views of the Talamanca Mountains and coastal ridges. It would make an exceptional private estate or could continue to be managed as a nature reserve open to the public. There are several excellent potential house sites for a buyer wishing to build a larger home than the existing 1-bedroom house.

Finca Cántaros also has archeological interest, centered on its 3000-year old lake and wetlands

Location Pacific slope of the southern zone of Costa Rica. Puntarenas province; Coto Brus county. Nearest town is San Vito, about 6 min. away; the neighborhood is Linda Vista. San Vito, founded in 1952 by Italian settlers and now the Coto Brus county seat, has a population of about 10,000 in a regional population of about 55,000. The town has all services one expects in a vibrant community. While predominantly rural, the area hosts an increasingly cosmopolitan community of permanent and part-time residents from North America and Europe. Las Cruces Biological Station/Wilson Botanical Garden, a center of scientific research and intellectual life of the community, is just 2.5 km away.

San Jose (capital of Costa Rica) is 287 km away or about a 5-hour drive. There is daily bus service from San Vito to San Jose. The nearest intra-national commercial airport is about 74 km away in Golfito, about 1.25 hrs by taxi. The nearest quality beaches on the Pacific coast are about a 1.5-hr drive.

Buildings: A small but charming 1-bedroom house (built in 1994, approx. 82 m²/880 ft²) is perfect for a couple or as guesthouse or rental property. A larger building near the main road (built in 1962, remodeled in 1995 and 2010, approx. 83 m²/890 ft²) houses the caretaker’s family, a small lending library, and a commercially viable Central and South American crafts store owned and run by the current owners. The property also contains several “rancho” shelters and bodegas (storage sheds) as well as a clear plastic covered greenhouse for a vegetable garden and nursery.

Utilities:

Excellent water from a mountain-spring in the nearby Talamanca Mts. (A.Y.A.). Property has its own 300-gal. (1100-liter) water tank for backup.
