Main Residence

SAMOTHRACE is a magnificent country estate located on 8.3 heavily forested acres about two thirds of the way up the mountain side on Calle Rodriguez just north of the town of Grecia. Located at 5,000 ft. the air is pure and clean with temperature variance of only a few degrees thus offering near perfect living enjoyment.; It never gets hot and it never gets cold – PERFECT!

Construction is of unusually high standards, far more rigid than Construction Codes in the U.S.  It was the owner’s intention to have the finest in construction quality, and to achieve it, placed no fund limitations on the building contractor.


There are two exceptional features of the property that clearly set it aside from most any other similar property anywhere in the world.

First is the spectacular panoramic vista of the Central Valley below and the three mountain ranges some 50 miles away.  While at 5,000 ft. level and two thirds up the heavily forested mountain side, we are the only structure within a kilometer distance. 

There is no building farther up the mountain.  The large property is large enough to allow each home not visible from the others

While this vista (at night the lights of the valley are spectacular), perhaps even more unique is the area just to the east and southeast and substantially below the level of the Main House and Guest House.  Here we look down on a canopy of the top of a rain forest below; a part of this property forms a small part of that canopy of tree tops. The boundary between the Government Forest Preserve and SAMOTHRACE is formed by a waterfall on the River Tacares. 

This Forest Preserve is protected by Costa Rican law and is this small country’s widely recognized rain forest conservation program.  It is reassuring to know this great vista is guaranteed never to change for the enjoyment of generations to come.



The Main House, (6,000 sq. ft.), consists of 17 rooms (including baths).  Building started in 1996 per the drawings and specifications of a licensed US Architect. It must be noted that the house measures approximately 140 feet in length.  There are three large Salas (living rooms), the Sala Formal, the Sala Familiar and the Sala Griega.  There is a 17 foot cathedral ceiling in the Sala Griega and an open fireplace.  In the Salas are 4 built-in 10 foot tall hardwood book shelves with closed storage below.  Noteworthy as a major attraction, is the 10 foot ceilings throughout.  The ceilings in the entire basic house, including baths and closets, are heavy crossed hardwood beams – something that is seldom seen. 

The formal dining room has a large crystal chandelier and wall scones.  The kitchen is spacious and has an adjacent but separate dining area.  Again here we see handmade solid hardwood cabinets with more than enough storage for all of your kitchen needs.

There are five large bedrooms.  Three bedrooms and two baths are connected by a corridor in the east wing and two equally large bedrooms and two baths are connected by a corridor to the west wing.  The west wing also contains a laundry/sewing room separated from the corridor by a heavy glass door. Each bedroom has ample closet space.  The bedrooms in the east wing each have large walk-in closets with built-ins.


Guest Residence

The Guest House is located some 225 feet from the Main House and is connected by a lighted walkway.  It is located in the best position to appreciate the vista, having an unimpeded view. The construction is essentially the same as described for the Main House.  The Guest House has a large sala (living room) with open fireplace and six large picture windows along the south and west walls to easily permit enjoyment of the vista from inside the house.  An even more open view is available from the large L-shaped terazza (porch) and serves as a great place to relax in perfect tranquility, to read, to bird watch or simply to enjoy the view.  There is a large bedroom with walk-in closet, a full kitchen and two baths.  The floors are all of Italian ceramic tile except in the bedroom where we have the hardwood floors.


Entertainment Pavilion (Rancho)

The Entertainment Pavilion (rancho) is a separate structure easily accessible from the Main House and has the same tile roof but is open sided except for the wrought iron fence on three sides.  On the fourth (west) side is a bank of facilities in support of any entertainment event.  This consists of cristobal cabinets, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, sink, and a barbecue grill all covered with the same Italian ceramic tile as on the floor. Here again we see the 12” by 12” solid almendro pillars supporting the beamed cathedral ceiling with a large hanging lamp.  The roof is supported by the 5” by 12” almendro beams covering the complete length of some 25 feet.  Hopefully the buyer will be able to appreciate the never to be duplicated features as the present owner has.  This facility is designed to promote entertaining, even large groups without having to go into the Main House.  Still, it serves as a refuge for the family or guests for reading, relaxing or simply to enjoy the beautiful surrounding gardens.


Employee Home & Storage Bodega

The Employee House is located at the front gate to the property, but is not visible from the Main House or the Guest House.  The house has a sala (living room), kitchen, two bedrooms and a bath plus a carport with gate to enter from the public road.  Of course, the house could be used for any other purposes or even rented out being so distant from the Main House.

The storage building is constructed of the same materials as the Main House and has the same roof to be consistent with the other buildings in the Complex.  In addition, there is a separate covered storage facility for storing excess construction materials but is located as to not be visible either the Main House or the Guest House, being nestled in the woods above the Guest House.
